I installed 'Boom' on my 11' MBA to increase the volume on low level sources. It worked, but used an unacceptably large amount of CPU. I uninstalled it in the usual way, however I am left with an audio device called 'Boomdevice' (visible in the Audio MIDI setup utility). This doesn't seem to be affecting anything, but I would like to get rid of it. In the Audio MIDI Setup app on your Mac, choose Window Show MIDI Studio. In the MIDI Studio window, click the Choose MIDI Configuration pop-up menu (it may show Default), then choose New Configuration. Enter a name for the new configuration, then click OK. To add a new external MIDI device, click the Add button in the MIDI Studio toolbar.

If your MOTU interface is not showing up in Audio MIDI Setup, MOTU Audio Setup, MOTU Discovery, or your DAW on High Sierra or later, you might need to enable the driver in your System Preferences. To enable the MOTU drivers, follow these steps: Download and install the very latest installer for your MOTU interface.

If you want your icon to look nice and pretty, you should create a TIFF with a transparent background. The built-in scaling these icons are subject to can make some pretty ugly results unless you take care to make decent graphics to start with, and the panel expects the image to have an alpha channel.

You can find a wonderful tutorial on how to create your own instrument icons for Apple's Audio MIDI Setup here:

If you don't like to draw the icons yourself, here is some prepacked artwork:

There might be more but I'm just lazy... Cheers!

I'd like to share these icons I made with an action script:
TritonRack.tiff, Korg EA1.tif, Karma.tiff, JV-1010.tiff, JStation.tiff, Emu MoPhat.tiff, Kurzweil K2500R.tiff
Download them here:

Wow, nice work, brutus. Thanks :-)

Actually, at least for MacOS 10.5.5, you can create user specific icons (which will move with the User area if you move the account to another machine) by creating a directory path at ~/Library/Audio/MIDI Devices/Your Chosen Icon Library Name/Images and placing the images in there.

Recover MIDI Audio device utility / icon to osx platform

Hi, I wonder if anyone can help please , I have been using an Edirol UA-4fx to access logic 8, but most recently my young son has put the midi audio set up icon in the trash ( and its gone!)
I have tried reloading my osx 10.4.11 (mini Mac) platform (both discs) but still there is no midi audio icon in the utility folder and obviously my interface unit is not working..
Any response would be a great help thanks Steve

... I believe the problem is Audio Midi Setup. Even though I enable the correct stream and choose the correct speakers from with 'speaker configuration,' and even though the test tone buttons work over the appropriate speakers in that window, after I hit 'apply,' when playing multichannel audio files in QT7 or via Quicklook in the Finder, the problem persists (summing all channels to L & R speakers).
Furthermore, when I click 'Done' in the speaker config window and quit Audio Midi Setup and re-open it, the speaker configuration window reveals that my multichannel setup has reverted to Audio Midi Setup's intial state: a 2 channel (stereo) setup. I've done this at least ten times, as well as having deleted the AMS prefs and launched the utility in 32-bit mode with no success.'
Has anyone else with a multi-speaker setup had any problems with AMS initializing their speaker configuration, and just plain not working?

I don't know if this will help you, but I once had a problem with Audio Midi Setup forgetting its settings - I found that the settings were only securely stored if I made the changes while logged on as an administrator.
